Helpful Review: “I remember growing up a lot of kids had the Red Ryder, but I was lucky enough to have an awesome Dad who bought me an 880 in the late 1970s / early 1980s.

Bought this kit to replace an old broken 880 that I’ve had in my closet since the about 1980 when I was a kid. The old one would no longer pump and hold air. I tried to fix it up with new parts but soon gave up since a new one was so affordable.

Surprised to see that the new one is still made pretty much the same way except its black instead of brown. I think the black looks cooler now. The only real difference is the pump arm on the old one was all metal and the new one is a hard plastic.

Still seems solid and heavy though. These 880s shoot powerfully and accurate. If I get another 35 years out of this gun I’ll be a happy old man by then. You get a tin of both pellets and BBs ready to go in this kit.

I also like the yellow adjustable glasses that come with this kit. A lot of people complain about the scope, but I found it to be quite accurate once you sight it in.

I prefer using BB iron sights though (my old one never had a fancy schmancy scope), so I’ll probably take off the scope eventually anyway. Overall, I’m really impressed with this kit and the great price. It reminds me of my childhood.” -Cabo

Trending Review: “Got a squirrel problem and don’t want to spend a bundle or spook the neighbors? This is your gun. The scope is its only real drawback. After mounting, it pointed right of the muzzle. I had to shim the front bracket with thin pasteboard to get a good eyeball alignment.

After 8 practice shots, it groups about an inch at 25 yards, about the distance of an average back yard. It’s hard to do much better since the scope doesn’t magnify well at that range.

The test was from well inside a room out a window opened about 8 inches. At 6 pumps, it’s no louder than a cap pistol. Penetration was through an eighth inch of heavy pressboard, then into a tree trunk flush with the surface. This was with the flat shot included. Imagine what you can do with 10 pumps and Crosman Destroyers.

A tip for novice gunners: turn the top screw clockwise if you’re shooting high. Turn the side screw clockwise if you’re shooting too far right. One complete turn moves the impact point about 5 inches.

The only cons concern the cheap scope. Since it straddles the bolt chamber, loading is tricky, and could cost you an opportunity. This doesn’t compare well with the Crosman Fury, which can be loaded and cocked in five seconds flat. Unfortunately, it creats a loud sonic crack.

The biggest advantage to this gun is being able to zero the scope on your own property. That’s how quiet it is. It doesn’t cost much; go ahead and add it to your collection.” -Mick Williams

My Friend’s Review: “This rifle is incredible!! It is the most accurate and easy to use BB gun I have had. My first was a Daisy single pump I got at age 10. It was great fun but it took considerable patience and skill to use.

Over the years I’ve had a few Crosmans that were nice. However I was ” blown away “with the accuracy and ease of use of this Daisy. At 30 yards I get a perfect cluster.

It must be due to the rifled barrel ,which I don’t believe my older guns had. I now have arthritis and stopped shooting , in part, because of the difficulty of pumping the gun.

The 880 is very easy on your joints and and a pleasure to use .Great fun, and I may actually be able to chase the deer away with a shot to the butt.” -James

Helpful Review: “I grew up with Daisy BB guns shooting minnows in our backyard canal, and 60 years later I bought my second one for different reasons. I now have a farm with lots of livestock, including two new Great Pyrenees dogs that I am about to let loose from their fenced area.

However, I know that they will be going after our chickens right away. This BB gun will hopefully work fine to discourage them from attacking the chickens without hurting them more than just a little sting.

My neighbor uses one and encouraged me to get one. It was easy to open the package and load BBs. It says it holds 650 BBs, and it’s probably right. I stopped loading after about 100 or so. The loading process is simple enough, but I need to find a better way. Pouring the BBs from the bottle spout doesn’t work well.

The BBs get clogged at the small opening. It seemed to work better by pouring BBs into my hand and cupping it just right over the loading spot.

Cocking it is simple and sweet. I held the rifle upwards and cocked it, and it loaded and fired every time. You can cock it with or without the safety on, and it both loads and fires perfectly either way.

I fired my first shot at a plastic bucket about 25 feet away, and it hit it and bounced off. I fired many more and hit the target. I tried firing about 50 feet, and the ballistic curve is somewhat significant.

I’m not an expert, but I would guess that at 50 feet the BB dipped at least an inch. At 350 fps, I’m guessing that’s about right. Somewhere between .5 inch and 1.5 inch at 50 feet. I plinked at plastic buckets, plywood sheets, metal poles, and a doghouse metal roof.

The BBs all bounced off. I got a good indication of the actual force of the BB when I hit the metal pole. Just like astronomers use the intensity of light to measure star distances, the intensity of the ping sound of the BB on the pole about 10 feet away was an indication of the energy of the BB.

It was quite a ping. I would not want to be hit by one of these from 10 feet away. This gun, at this price, is definitely worth the money. I recommend it to anyone looking to own a good BB gun that will perform.” -Sabine

A Few Words From My Neighbor: “I bought the gun to target shoot and shoot squirrels. Does both great! Can hit a moving squirrel and with 10 shots I can get a sliver dollar radius of hits at 50 ft.

This gun could be a bit cheaper but overall good price, I got the best experience with the “Daisy steel plated BBs.” this gun WILL NOT kill squirrels or Agama Agama lizards that is the job for a gun like a Gamo pellet gun.

This gun can’t even shoot through a fence picket but it can go far so still be mindful of others around you. I haven’t had a jam for these past 4-5 months and. This is a great beginner BB gun!” -Andrew Johnson

Reassuring Review: “Boys of my generation almost universally wished for a Red Ryder BB rifle. I don’t know of anyone who “put their eye out,” but there may be some unlucky kid out there who did.

BB’s do ricochet and safety glasses make a lot of sense. This version of the classic fits an adult better and allows one to have fun again, shooting paper targets and plinking away to one’s heart’s content.

This version has a metal lever too, but still retains the plastic trigger of the modern kid’s RR. Why not go all the way with a quality, metal trigger, Daisy?” -Bill B.

With a 50-shot BB or single shot/pellet capacity, this rifle caters to shooters of all levels, making it an essential companion for any outing.

Helpful Review: “I am in my 70’s and have enjoyed plinking and target shooting since elementary school. I have owned many firearms and a few air rifles and CO2 revolvers through the years. My Sheridan Silver Streak was a bit too powerful (an now too valuable) to leave in the workshop for dispatching mice.

I usually do not like the modern generation of air rifles which have way too much plastic, horrible triggers, poor sights, and no “character.” I read a number of reviews and ordered a Daisy 901 as a result. When it arrived, I cleaned the barrel carefully and thoroughly to remove any lubricants/preservatives and lubed as directed by the manual.

I cocked it, pumped it 6 times (and it was easy to pump), and loaded a 13.4 grain JBS Monster Diablo pellet. Off of a rest, and at 15 feet indoors, the first pellet went exactly where I was aiming. The next two just made a slightly larger hole. The trigger pull is long and not crisp, but I can’t fault the result.

The light pipe front sight was also helpful in that I was indoors. I experimented with steel bb’s and had an occasional flyer. I am also experimenting with lighter weight pellets which are less expensive than the Monster Diablo’s.

I will also mount a scope to see if the plastic scope dovetail does a decent job of holding a scope in alignment. I am definitely fascinated by this air rifle and am having to re-evaluate my bias against modern “too much plastic” air guns.

In my opinion, this is a wonderful mouse control tool and plinker for not a lot of dollars. I hope Daisy comes out with a “premium” model of the 901 that has a wood-grain look, a better trigger, sling mounts, and a metal scope rail.” -T. Turner

Trending Review: “I’ve had a Sheridan Silver Streak for about 10 years now, and a Blue Streak before that. I use them for pest control, as we have lots of unwanted critters around our house. But they are pretty loud, and I wanted a quieter rifle that won’t alert the neighbors when I’m using it.

The Daisy 901 sure fills the bill, as it is both very quiet, and extremely accurate. At 10 pumps it is quieter than the Sheridan at 3, and definitely more accurate. It is also way more accurate with pellets than with BBs.

I also purchased a Winchester 1977XS rifle (also made by Daisy), which is a more powerful version of the Daisy 880. I find that the 901 is much easier to pump than the Winchester, and quieter as well.

The 901 is more accurate than the Winchester, but the Winchester does have noticeably more power. I purchased a suppressor from Buck-Rail that works on both guns, and it reduces the noise considerably so I won’t disturb anyone when shooting either gun.” -Riddler

My Uncle’s Review: “I love this gun. Accurate right out of the box. It has plenty of power. I can take a rabbit at 35 yards with one shot to the head. They fall over dead right away. I can shoot a sparrow off the top of the silo at 100 feet.

I use pellets in it. I have never used bb’s In it. It is not picky about the brand of pellets. I can’t believe such an outstanding rifle for the price. It is so much different than the pellet guns of 60 years ago. It has definitely put the fun back into shooting.

I am 67 years old and don’t even need a scope for it. I love the fiber optic sight. Daisy you sure make a great air rifle. Gotta love the 901.” -Maya

★ Best Reviews: Hands-on Experiences

Helpful Review: “I was considering a break barrel pellet gun but decided to go with this combination pellet and BB gun instead, mostly because of the price and because BBs are easier to load than pellets.

Turns out the “automatic” BB feature is what makes this gun so easy to pick up for five minutes of plinking. A quick back and forth on the bolt loads another BB and with three or four pumps you’re ready to go.

I installed an inexpensive red dot sight and once that is dialed in, the accuracy and ease of aiming on this gun are amazing. My wife notices the sound of the pumping action more than she notices the sound of the gun “firing”, so I’m not worried at all about bothering the neighbors. There is zero recoil.

At forty or fifty feet and six to ten pumps, a BB will go through both sides of a heavy tin can, so if that gopher ever pops his head out of the ground while I’m shooting, he’s a goner. What cheap and rewarding fun.” -Bob G.”

A Few Words From My Nephew: “I bought the Daisy Outdoor bb rifle for my grandson. It is sturdy and easy to use. I only need to pump it three or four times and it has good power. I only wish the stock would be shorter for him. I bought a Daisy spring loaded rifle with a shorter stock but it has no power.

It is accurate, again with three to four pumps. I did not try pellets because I need smaller ones than the pellets I have. I would recommend this for a child eight to nines years because the length of the stock.

I would definitely not permit my grandson to use it by himself. One thing I do not like is that the safety cannot be activated after the projectile is fired. It is not because It is dangerous but when I am instructing him on the safe use of firearms.

I instruct him to activate the safety when he fires a weapon. This safety can be activated after a bb enters the breach and the bolt closed.

If he does not think to place the safety on after the bb is in the barrel he could forget it and after pumping it the rifle could go off accidently.” -Den

Trending Review: “I’m not an airgun expert but this little Daisy Powerline 35 really impressed me. It is much easier to pump than my Crosman recruit, getting to ten pumps is a breeze for me with the powerline instead of a chore.

Those are the only 2 multi pumps I own and even though the recruit is listed at 680 fps and the 35 is supposed to be 625 max the powerline delivers great power out of box, it easily seems a match for the recruit.

My complaints are similar to what others have pointed out, loading pellets is a pain and the bb capacity isn’t very high. This is a great addition to any collection but if I was only gonna buy one bb or pellet gun it probably wouldn’t be this one. While it is a great gun the Crosman brands that include the pellet clip system are worlds easier to load.

UPDATE: After enjoying this gun for 8 months i upgraded to a Powerline 880 and have just given this one to my 11 year old niece. She can get to ten pumps but is struggling after #5.

I put a scope on it and she can shoot it pretty good, albeit you don’t wanna push the distance on it too far. I still think this gun has it’s place and was fun to shoot, it actually handles the bb’s better than a rifled gun like the 880 does and so is more versatile really, at close range the 35 does a pretty good job on pellets and I’ve feed it a variety of ammo from daisy, crosman and gamo.

It’s shorter than the 880 so is a better gun for kids even though it’s a little tough for them to pump but I’d say for kids 13 up it should be easier. Frankly I like this gun and would have kept it if I hadn’t needed space and a gift at the time.” -Craig C

Helpful Review: “Excellent gun for a 103 year old design. The first one was sold late in 1913, but usually they are listed as starting production in 1914. There’s been well over 20 million of them sold by the mid 1970s.

Now they are made in China, but instead of the cheap plastic stock and forearm of the 50’s and 60’s, they have gone back to wood and they still have the same scroll engraving of the 1915 rifle. The only change has been to add a safety behind the trigger.

They were made until 1978 then discontinued for a few years. Daisy made a 100 year (Daisy commemorative, not the model 25) commemorative model in 1986, made exactly like the 1915 model, then discontinued again until about 2009 when they went back into production, but in China this time.

The workmanship is still as good as it ever was. Just remember, the POI (point of impact) changes every time you take the barrel out to re-load it. You can almost never get it back to the same place each time you screw it in. Here’s what I did.

I found where it shot the straightest (the barrel not quite “tight”). The barrel continually unscrews itself as you shoot, also, so the POI is constantly changing. I made two rubber washers from an old inner-tube and put them on the end of the screw-in threads on the barrel (the part you take out to reload).

Then I can tighten it down with my hand and it stays in that one spot without unscrewing itself when you shoot it. Now I have a perfect shooting gun that hits a golf ball at 33 feet every shot.” -Spydie

Trending Review: “When I was a kid I had the Red Ryder BB gun and had a blast plinking with it. I always wanted the Daisy model 25. It was the ultimate BB gun back in the 50’s and 60’s.

I’m 62 years old now and I just purchased a Daisy model 25. I love it! I just wish it was made in the USA and not China. I would pay more for the USA version. Seems to me it’s an insult to turn over an American legion to be made in China.

Anyway, the gun shoots pretty good. The sights were right on out of the box. However after about 200 rounds the sights were way off. The sight screws weren’t completely tight and loosened up after being used for awhile. Took about an hour to sight in.

Getting some really tight grouping and a lot of bulls eyes! Great rifle! I wouldn’t pay no more than what I paid for it on Amazon. Considering where is it was made, it still is made very well. The added trigger safety is a great bonus. I’m going to teach my wife how to shoot the model 25.

After we get “Black Bart” I’ll turn her loose with my Taurus 40 cal. I have no regrets with my purchase. Hopefully the China made model 25 will last as long as the USA version.” -Terrence L. Gray

My Fellow’s Review: “I bought this gun for snail control. It isn’t super powerful but it will clear snails alright. I wanted something quiet and pretty rapid to fire without wasting CO2 cartridges and not having to pump 10 times after each shot.

This is a great gun however I am a short guy with short arms so cocking the gun requires me to keep removing stock from my shoulder and then cock. That’s the only complaint I really have.

Other than that the mechanics are great! I love the feed barrel where you load the bb’s. it is very reliable and easy. I also own a Red Ryder and I found that sometimes when I cock the lever a bb wouldn’t load and I shot air only.

I would have to tilt the gun and point it up so the bb’s would load and then cock the lever That’s why I bought this rifle because you load the screw out barrel with about 50 bb’s then it fires perfectly every time. Accuracy wise I’m shooting point blank about 10 inches so I never tried long distances but point blank is pretty accurate but I still miss here and there but simply pull the lever and I’m back to kick some more a$$.

That would be cool if there was a accessory mount. I ziptied a flashlight to the barrel and was blasting. Great gun and very reliable. Not very strong so don’t expect to down varmints but tickle them or possibly massage them. Great for blasting crabs at the beach too because you can shoot lots of bb’s fast.

You will be eating crabby patties in no time! Be careful and wear eye protection. Bb’s ricochet like crazy! This gun has a safety next to trigger. I wish they made a stubby version for stubby short people.

This gun is a remake of an old popular model. Great gun overall. If you need to kick some serious a$$ then try looking at a .22 like a Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100 Break Barrel Air Rifle (.22) powered by Nitro Piston®.

It shoots up to 1100 FPS (alloy) / 950 FPS (lead) / 28.6 FPE. Also a big long gun though. Nice affordable plinking fun gun.” -Duke Togo

Helpful Review: “Bought this for my son for Christmas. Although he just turned thirty, it’s a tradition to watch “A Christmas Story”, over and over on Christmas day. The BB gun was the last present he opened and he was totally floored. “Best Christmas Ever” were his words.

It is the first gun he has ever owned. I had also bought a box of bb’s so he spent the next hour or so outside shooting it. I have been an avid hunter for 35 years but never introduced him to the sport.

That being said, as far as the gun itself, its a basic gun. One cock of the lever and it’s ready to shoot. Accuracy is mediocre to maybe 15-20 yards, then starts dropping fast. Mainly because of the limited power. Make no mistake though, this bb gun can hurt someone if not handled or used correctly.

Did not buy this for target practice or to hunt. This bb gun was bought for nostalgic purposes only.” -Kalei

A Few Words From My Buddy: “I would have to say that this BB gun lives up to expectations. Every time I’ve tried to fire it, it has done so without a problem. It’s not only reliable, but it is also consistent.

I wanted a simple BB gun, that I did have to pump a bunch of times in order to get one shot off, and I also didn’t want to deal with CO2, so as far as those specifications go this is the perfect gun for that.

It does come at the cost of losing strength (it’s not that strong as far as fps go), but if you want a powerful non-lethal firearm you should consider an air rifle. I just wanted something that I could shoot for hours without any problems and so far this gun has been perfect for me. I expect it to last for decades to come.” -Jeffery

Trending Review: “This was a Christmas gift for my 8 year old son and we took it out yesterday and shot it a lot.

These things have come a long way since I was a kid. My old BB gun when I was a kid many years ago, was very inaccurate and the sights were way off, but this one is almost like shooting a real rifle. At about 11 yards it was spot on.

We were nailing aluminum cans, and not only hitting them, but hitting them where we wanted too. The gun is just the right size for my son, but still big enough to be fun for me. It has a real wooden stock with Red Ryder carved fancily into it, and it holds about 650 BB’s.

That means I don’t have to refill it often for my son. The only small problem we had was the little ring and leather strap on the side of the receiver. My son is left handed so we had to remove the strap as it was in the way of the trigger.

Our son loves this little BB gun and to be frank, so do I. I highly recommend it for both kids and adults alike. What a great way to spend quality time with my son, and teach him how to shoot and be safe at the same time.” -James Miller

A Few Words From My Aunt: “Its’s very accurate. It has safety. Another thing I’d like to conclude it’s just the greatest BB gun! – the kid

As you can tell my son loves his BB gun! He is 9 years old. I also am pleased about the safety switch. This toy keeps him entertained for long periods and keeps him off Minecraft for a little while which is a plus!

He would sleep with this gun if I let him. It seems to work really well, is very sturdy and is easy to cock. He has cocked the gun repeatedly probably over a hundred times by now in less than a week, so that tells me it’s a good quality toy.

If your looking for a great first BB gun. This is it! The price is great for this quality and the hours of enjoyment your kid will get from it.” -Monica

Helpful Review: “THE GOOD:
This is seriously strong; and being a small size for a rifle, it makes for an interesting combination. Lightweight, painted in black (not matte), and has an easy-to-insert mechanism for the BB’s.

THE BAD:
The accuracy is somewhat off; which means one needs to learn how to aim in a specific way to hit the target. The lever is far too strong to action with your hand, let alone with the back of your fingers as you’re supposed to; I’m a 24 year old and I have to use my leg as a block to be able to pull the lever all the way up.

THE UGLY:
The logo the stock; the gun already says “Daisy” on each side of the lever, but to ruin a beautiful piece of wood by carving a logo is not only shameless advertising, but needless and damaging the final product.
ALSO: In some, if not most states, toys like these need an orange strip on the end of the barrel to denote it is not a firearm. The lack of tape or a removable piece of plastic is contra productive to those who buy the product and aren’t aware of the laws around them.” -Koko

Trending Review: “This is a perfect starter gun for young boys. I do bb range with 200 boys every year and the RED RIDDER is to heavy for most young scouts.

The only way to better the BUCK BB gun is to make it shorter and add daisy 105 FIBER OPTIC SIGHT from daisy . I have 6 red riders for older boys and 6 bucks and 2 bucks that I have cut 1 inch off of the stock for very small boys and I have put the FIBER OPTIC FRONT SIGHT on all of them .” -Lawrence E Hanes
